Update RC-Scanner Bootstrap

Last updated: 2026-10-12

Purpose

This article explains how to replace the RC-Scanner bootstrap binary (rc-scanner-bootstrap) on an installed scanner appliance with a newer version.

Introduction

Outpost24 publishes each bootstrap release to a public download location:

https://static.outpost24.com/rc-scanner-bootstrap-<VERSION>

Example: https://static.outpost24.com/rc-scanner-bootstrap-0.6.7

Online and air-gapped scanners use the same binary.

Prerequisites

  • SSH access to the RC-Scanner VM with a user that can run sudo.

  • The target version number (provided by Outpost24 Support or the release notes).

Update

Online RC-Scanner Update

  1. SSH into the RC-Scanner VM.

  2. Check the current version:

    Bash
    rc-scanner-bootstrap --version

  3. Set the target version and download it:

    Bash
    VERSION=0.6.7
    curl -fL -o /tmp/rc-scanner-bootstrap \
      "https://static.outpost24.com/rc-scanner-bootstrap-${VERSION}"
    chmod +x /tmp/rc-scanner-bootstrap

  4. Back up the old binary and replace it:

    Bash
    BIN=$(command -v rc-scanner-bootstrap)
    sudo cp "$BIN" "${BIN}.bak"
    sudo mv /tmp/rc-scanner-bootstrap "$BIN"

  5. Verify the update:

    Bash
    rc-scanner-bootstrap --version

Air-Gapped RC-Scanner Update

  1. On a machine with internet access, download the target version:

    Bash
    VERSION=0.6.7
    curl -fL -o rc-scanner-bootstrap \
      "https://static.outpost24.com/rc-scanner-bootstrap-${VERSION}"

  2. Transfer the file to the RC-Scanner VM (scp, removable media, according to your site policy):

    Bash
    scp rc-scanner-bootstrap <user>@<rc-scanner-ip>:/tmp/

  3. SSH into the RC-Scanner VM and make the file executable:

    Bash
    chmod +x /tmp/rc-scanner-bootstrap

  4. Back up the old binary and replace it:

    Bash
    BIN=$(command -v rc-scanner-bootstrap)
    sudo cp "$BIN" "${BIN}.bak"
    sudo mv /tmp/rc-scanner-bootstrap "$BIN"

  5. Verify the update:

    Bash
    rc-scanner-bootstrap --version

Roll Back

If the new version does not work as expected, restore the previous binary:

Bash
BIN=$(command -v rc-scanner-bootstrap)
sudo mv "${BIN}.bak" "$BIN"
