Dynamic Asset Groups
Purpose
This document describes how to set up and manage Dynamic Asset Groups.
Introduction
A Dynamic Asset Group is managed by the system, so that all assets matching the criteria for the group is automatically added to the group. Assets that no longer match the criteria is removed.
Managing Dynamic Asset Groups
Creating Dynamic Groups
To create a Dynamic Asset Group:
Navigate to the Asset group management interface in the Portal.
Click the green plus
button to open the Add asset group form.
Check the Dynamic group box.
Enter a name for the dynamic group.
Click ADD to save the group.
The created Dynamic Asset Group is presented under the Dynamic collapsible block.
Click on the Dynamic Asset Group’s name to view its details.
Define the tag expressions:Included Asset Tags: Enter tags, for example,
team:support
,location:karlskrona
that the assets must match to be included. To be specific, for an asset to be included in a dynamic group, it must contain all the included tags when multiple tags are present.Excluded Asset Tags: Optionally, specify tags, for example,
team:internalit
,location:karlskrona
to exclude assets. An asset is excluded from the group if it contains at least one tag in the excluded tag category.
Save the group. The system automatically populates the group with assets matching the criteria.
Child groups can be created under this group, inheriting its tag expressions in all three categories: group tags, included asset tags and excluded asset tags, and further refine the asset subsets.
Updating Dynamic Groups
To modify an existing Dynamic Asset Group:
Locate the group in the Asset group management interface in the Portal.
Edit the tag expressions:
Add or remove Included asset tags to change the inclusion criteria.
Update Excluded asset tags to define exclusion settings.
Save the changes. The system re-evaluates all assets and dynamically adds or removes them based on the updated criteria.
Changes to a parent groups tag expressions automatically propagate to its child groups, ensuring consistency across the hierarchy.
Understanding Processing Delays
Dynamic asset groups are processed asynchronously to ensure system stability and scalability, which can introduce a slight delay. This delay is normal and expected, as the system evaluates and applies the new criteria across all relevant assets in the background.
Tag Expression Logic and Inheritance
Dynamic asset groups rely on tag expressions to determine membership:

Included asset tags: Assets must match all specified tags, for example,
(location:karlskrona) AND (room:gpo)
.Excluded asset tags: Assets matching any exclude tag are omitted, for example,
(location:karlskrona AND room:gpo) AND NOT (team:support OR team:internalit)
.Inheritance: Child groups inherit their parents tag expressions. For example, if a parent group uses
location:karlskrona
, and a child group addsteam:rbvm
, this will create a subset of assets for the child group, for example, location:karlskrona
ANDteam:rbvm
.
This structure ensures that child groups always contain a filtered subset of their parents' assets.
